Double Negative Photography is the award-winning fine art photography practice of Amanda and Jason Ray, a husband-and-wife creative team based outside London and working internationally. Known for their evocative use of traditional film techniques, particularly medium format analogue photography, their work occupies the space between cinematic portraiture, fine art, and visual storytelling.
With features in Vogue, Lomography, international galleries, museums, publications, and exhibitions worldwide, Double Negative has become recognized for imagery that feels at once timeless, intimate, and unmistakably atmospheric. Their photographs have been described as haunting, romantic, melancholic, and dreamlike, yet grounded by a deeply human emotional realism.
Working primarily with natural light and traditional film processes, Amanda and Jason create images that explore memory, identity, mortality, transformation, and the quiet tension between beauty and decay. Their work often unfolds within forgotten landscapes, ancient forests, crumbling architecture, windswept coastlines, and other liminal spaces that feel suspended outside of time.
The duo’s aesthetic is shaped by a lifelong fascination with poetry, folklore, ghost stories, old cinema, gothic romanticism, and the imperfect texture of analogue photography itself. Every frame is approached with painterly attention to atmosphere, composition, and emotional resonance. Rather than chasing perfection, Double Negative seeks honesty, mood, and the fragile beauty found within impermanence.
Their subjects are frequently presented in ways that feel both anonymous and deeply personal. Faces disappear into shadow, figures dissolve into landscape, and moments linger somewhere between dream and memory. This ambiguity invites the viewer into the image, allowing space for interpretation and emotional connection rather than simple observation.
While rooted firmly in fine art photography, Double Negative’s visual language translates naturally into editorial portraiture, fashion, music, publishing, and commercial collaborations. Their work carries a distinctive cinematic identity while remaining emotionally authentic and highly adaptable for magazines, brands, musicians, actors, authors, and cultural institutions seeking imagery with depth, atmosphere, and narrative power.
At the core of Double Negative Photography is a belief that photographs should not merely document a subject, but leave behind a feeling. Something half remembered. Something lived in. Something that lingers long after the image is gone.
“In the wreckage, we find sanctuary. In the silence, we find ourselves.”
